Neil and John  are planning a trip on the weekend of the 24th-26th February to Aviemore for 2 days of kayaking.
They are planning on kayaking grade 2/3 water – rivers such as the
upper/ middle Findhorn. We will decide nearer the time exactly where we will paddle depending on group ability and water levels.
The  are staying in Aviemore and will need numbers asap to book suitable accommodation.

Please note, this is not a leader led trip and is simply a group of friend’s going paddling, You will need to have some experience on rivers to take part! You are also welcome to come and go skiing/ shopping  and join us in the evenings for the food and craic!!

•       Session 1 (6.00pm to 6.30pm) Coaches & Helpers: Please be at the pool by 17.45h. This will allow coaches to have a go in a kayak and develop their own skills  and try things out before the actual session begins. There will be no formal coaching in this session.
•       Session 2 (6.30pm to 7.15pm): A session for novices  and those up to 2 star ability. Please be at the pool by 6.15pm. (Improvers can attend if the session is quiet and kayaks are available though they would not be given any priority for coaching).
•       Session 3 (7.15pm to 8.00pm):  A session for intermediate / improvers (those of 2 star ability and above). Coaching will be given but games maybe played (eg polo). Please be at the pool by 7.00pm

John Thurso MP and Councillor David Flear have agreed to do the presentation of the Open Canoes to the Club on Friday 1st July at 7pm. We now needs as many members to be at this presentation as possible.

The presentation will take place at Thurso Boating pond. We will need people in the canoes and others on the shore. So please can you have some paddling kit.

Outline plan is that we need to be at the boating pond for no later than 6.30pm to take the canoes from the storage container at the  swimming pool to the pond.

The Club's updated Consituition is now available on the website.

The Club has received funding support from Awards for All and the Highland Council to purchase 4 open canoes, paddles, poles,  sails, trolleys and a 6 canoe trailer. The equipment has been ordered and should be with us for the start of the outdoor Summer sessions.
This equipment will be of significant benefit for developing personal skills, coaching but also making the sport more accessible to a wider audience.

Information Day being held by ScottishPower Renewables (SPR).
SPR are proposing to develop a tidal array off the coast of Duncansby Head in the Pentland Firth. The aim of the Public Information Day is to update the local community and answer any questions.

Course Title: SCA LTPD/ Club Development Workshop
This workshop is intended for all members of the Club - members of the club committee, those leading or coaching on club trips and those who would like to find out more about getting involved with leading and coaching or just helping with the running / organising of the Club.  The workshop will look at the Long Term Paddler Development Model, the BCU Coaching and Leadership Schemes and the development of your club.  There will also be an opportunity to get out on the water to look at some simple coaching resources designed for use by coaches and non-coaches alike.

The first Scottish Women’s Paddle Symposium 14th & 15th May 2011

The first Scottish Women’s Paddle Symposium aim is to provide skills workshops to support each other as women in paddle-sport and help reach the next level, whatever that level is for you!

You will be aware of the marine renewable developments being planned for the Pentland Firth and Orkney Waters.   If you wish to register as a stakeholder to be consulted with over these developments,  then please contact Marine Scotland.  I would encourage you to do this to ensure that sea kayakers are fully consulted. For those who are not already aware, the 'Getting it right in child protection' training course cancelled from last year has been re-organised for January on 2 dates:

Thursday 13th January 6.30-9pm in Ormlie Community Centre.

Friday 14th 9.30 - 12noon in Wick Assembly Rooms.

The SCA/BCU intend that child protection training will eventually become mandatory for coaches.  I am sure it is also good practice for anyone else interacting with children at the club to attend.

Unfortunately, the Thurso date is a club night, so we need to make sure we don't have all coaches attending at the same time!  Myself and Kim could do with attending and I would need to attend on the Thursday night.  If we are short of coaches, then I could look to do some training at the SCA Club Coach Development weekend instead.

Could I ask that all club coaches interested in attending on the Thursday let me know, so we can check this doesn't threaten the novice session.

The Club  is fully committed to safeguarding the welfare of all children in its care and  recognises the responsibility to promote safe practice and to protect children from harm, abuse and exploitation.  The Club therefore takes on board guidance given by both the Scottish Canoe Association and the Highland Child Protection.

All club members who assist in  the organisation / running of the Club are encouraged to undertake a  formal training child protection. In particular this includes

The Scottish Canoe Association (SCA) has started a consultation with paddlers in Scotland.  Members, non-members and club members are all invited to take part. – this means YOU. An online questionnaire is now available  on the new SCA  website (www.canoescotland.org).  Please read the two documents explaining the SCA purpose and structure before proceeding to the Online Survey. I would encourage you to have a look and fill it in with any thoughts you may have as the results of this will impact on paddlesport in Scotland and in particular Clubs.

6th May: Equipment Preparation / Evening Session
This evening be aimed at returning equipment to the Club Store and preparing for the evening sessions. Please meet at 6.30pm (prompt) at the Club store at Thurso beach (West end of Esplanade - the old bathing huts). All members are asked to assist with returning the equipment to the Club Store.

• Novice Paddlers: Individuals attending for the first time will be shown how to check equipment prior to use and given a briefing for the outdoor sessions
• Experienced Paddlers: Individuals who of have attended previous summer sessions and need to  have the opportunity to go on the water once the equipment is sorted out.

9th  May: Loch Watten
This is planned as a day to get a feel for paddling outside, practice your skills learnt in the pool in sheltered environment, try out the different sorts of boats that the club has and have some fun.  The cost for this will be £5 to cover equipment costs and transporting equipment.  This is open to all members, althou

BCU UKCC Coach Level 1 courses are being organised in the Highlands.

The BCU Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Paddlesport is appropriate for individuals new to coaching, who have some knowledge of paddlesport, and wish to learn how to help others enjoy paddling. The qualification is appropriate to individuals who want to coach any of the various paddlesport disciplines. Level 1 Coaches will build skills during the course that will continue to develop as they start to coach under the guidance of a more qualified coach. This course is designed for a range of people, for example:
• A non-paddling parent of a child in a club
• A paddler who wants to help out in their local club
• Someone who wants to work in an activity centre

There are two courses being planned.  Both courses are modular and will run over two weekends
• Course 1: 31 July / 1 August and 7 /8 August
• Course 2: 2/3 October and 9/10 October

FIRST AID COURSE AT SKYAK ADVENTURES

Paul Cahill, a wilderness emergency care specialist, is running a Remote Emergency Care Level 2 course which if we get enough folk, maximum of 12, on  run 17-18th April at Skyak Adventures in Breakish, Skye.  This is a good basic first aid course for anyone who spends time in the outdoors and has ever wondered "would I know what to do if... ?".  It also satisfies the requirements for a number of canoe/kayak coaching and leadership courses.

The cost will be about £120 which includes a manual, face mask and certificate, total value of £30. Some general details for the course are attached, which you may want to look at, but Paul would like to emphasize that within this framework it can be orientated towards what folk want i.e. emphasis on paddling or........
