Hello fellow Pentland Canoe Club members,

Kim and I wanted to say a slightly belated but heartfelt thanks to all those who gave us such a wonderful send off from Thurso. We had a really great day canoeing down the River Thurso as pirates and the screams of excitement from Kim, as we went over the waterfalls (small weirs) and as she got capsized by John Speirs, were priceless.

It has been somewhat manic since our house move was brought forward at such short notice and it is only now that we are starting to feel vaguely organised. In fact, we shall be getting round to putting some pictures up this week and the view across Thurso Bay that you kindly gave us will be finding a home which will remind us of the happy 2 and a half years we spent with the club in Thurso. We shall also be getting the honorary membership, of which we're immensely proud, framed too!

As always when we get moved by the Navy, we have to start anew with making friends and settling into the local area. However, having done this for a few years now, we both agree that Thurso, Caithness and in fact the north of Scotland have made a lasting impression. We've made far more friends and done so much more than we ever expected. The Pentland Canoe Club have been a major part of that - the efforts of the coaches, committee and other helpers are fantastic and a great example of what can be achieved.

I have now been on what is called rather grandly, the Advanced Command and Staff Course, for nearly 2 weeks and it is pretty intense with a very challenging amount of reading to do, so please excuse the tardiness of this 'thank you'. It means that I will be limited in the amount of canoeing or kayaking I will be able to do over the next year, however, I'll be looking to see what might be available locally during my leave periods. When I move on to another posting next year though, I'll be looking to get back into a club, do more coaching and learn more skills. Hopefully, I'll persuade Kim to become a bank based coach too.

We'll definitely be returning to Thurso over the years, especially if there is a chance I could come back in the job of my former boss. When we do, we will look to join you out paddling on a Thursday night or on a weekend, or else just adjourn to a local haunt to catch up socially. On that note, I think we're going to sample the Strawberry Vodka in the hamper you gave us - we polished off the Cocoa Mountain chocolate in no time by the way.

Very best wishes to all in the club,

Kim and Mark

There's going to be about 20-30 of us, including up to 4 coaches who are coming over from Orkney for the day to coach canoeing skills.

Please meet at the boatshed, Thurso beach, at 9:30 on Sunday morning. Bring some fleecey/thermal layers for under your wetsuit/cag incase its chilly and some footwear you don't mind getting wet (bare feet not allowed). Don't forget a spare set of clothing to change into at the end, towel and a day's supply of hot and cold drinks.

Instead of a BBQ this year, we're going to have a buffet - could each person please bring something to share? Choices are endless - pasta/rice/noodle/potato/crispy salad, dip + pittas or carrot/celery sticks, sandwiches, quiche, sausage rolls etc...you could also bring a cake or tin of muffins or something as simple as some crusty bread if you really don't like cooking!

Please could you drop me a line to let me know what you're bringing, so we don't end up with 20 bowls of potato salad?

We'll sort out car sharing on Sunday morning - please can you let me know if you have a tow bar and are willing to tow a trailer?

Looking forward to it (especially the buffet, mmm can't wait)
Elaine
(E: esrowan@btinternet.com )

Skill Development for Clubs
As a result of investment by sportscotland the SCA has introduced a new programme to develop volunteer coaches and leaders in SCA Affiliated Clubs. This is a programme of regional courses to support the development of volunteers in personal skills, safety and leadership. Examples include:
• Foundation Safety and Rescue Training
• White Water Safety and Rescue Training
• Coastal Navigation and Tidal Planning
• 3 Star Assessment
• 4 Star Leader Assessment
This programme has been designed based on the responses to a questionnaire sent to clubs in summer 2010. This helped identify the local needs of coaches and was used to form regional coaching plans for each of the 10 SCA regions. A series of heavily subsidised or free events are now being arranged throughout 2011. The events are only open to volunteers in SCA affiliated clubs who are also full or junior SCA members. Check out the SCA website for details of the course dates in your area. Places are limited.
In addition to the programmed courses, the SCA offers a separate fund to support volunteers in clubs gain pre-requisites and endorsements to coaching awards. This may include 5 star leader, moderate water endorsement, open water navigation and tidal planning and advanced white water safety and rescue. Candidates must apply in advance. Additional eligibility criteria applies. Find out more and download the application form from the SCA website.

UKCC Scholarship Programme
Following on from the UKCC scholarship programme operated by the SCA since 2007, we are able to announce details of the new scholarship programme for 2011/2012. From 1st April 2011 until 31st March 2012 (or earlier if the funding is fully allocated), the SCA will offer support to candidates achieving the BCU UKCC Level 1, 2 or 3 coaching awards. This programme is made possible through investment by sportscotland. Scholarships are available towards total course cost subject to the following limits:
• Level 1 - 75% up to £200
• Level 2 - 50% up to £300 (including Level 2 Training or Level 2 Transfer, CPD module, Level 2 Assessment)
• Level 3 - 75% up to £400. (including Core, Intermediate modules, Discipline Specific Training, Assessment)
Conditions and eligibility criteria apply. Please see http://www.canoescotland.org/coaching/Resources/FundingSupport.aspx for further information and note that applications must be received by the SCA prior to the start date of the course.

SCA Development Officer
Lorraine McAuley has recently started with the SCA, in a new role as Development Officer. Lorraine joins the SCA to support volunteers across canoeing in Scotland, secure additional membership benefits, as well as assisting in the development of clubs. Lorraine is previously from the University of Strathclyde Sports Union, where she worked as Sports Development & Safety Co-ordinator, and has also worked for a National Governing Body (basketballscotland) prior to this. Lorraine very much looks forward to working with volunteers and members across Scotland- further information will be available soon.

6th May: Equipment Preparation / Evening Session
This evening be aimed at returning equipment to the Club Store and preparing for the evening sessions. Please meet at 6.30pm (prompt) at the Club store at Thurso beach (West end of Esplanade - the old bathing huts). All members are asked to assist with returning the equipment to the Club Store.

•	Novice Paddlers: Individuals attending for the first time will be shown how to check equipment prior to use and given a briefing for the outdoor sessions
•	Experienced Paddlers: Individuals who of have attended previous summer sessions and need to have the opportunity to go on the water once the equipment is sorted out.

9th May: Loch Watten
This is planned as a day to get a feel for paddling outside, practice your skills learnt in the pool in sheltered environment, try out the different sorts of boats that the club has and have some fun. The cost for this will be £5 to cover equipment costs and transporting equipment. This is open to all members, although under 14's will need to be accompanied by a responsible adult. Meet at the club hut (on Thurso beach) promptly at 9.30am if you need to use any club equipment. Otherwise, 10:00. You will also need to arrange your own transport to and from Loch Watten.

For those who wish, there will be an opportunity to undertake BCU 2 Star training and if appropriate assessment. For detail on the award see http://www.bcu.org.uk/tests-and-awards/personal-performance-awards/paddlesport-start-i-1-to-3-star/ . We would encourage current members to work towards this personal skill level.

13th May: Thursday Evening Sessions
These will be run slightly differently to previous years and we hope that the changes will benefit all members, both new and old, and we will go into more detail about this at the briefing session.

For new paddlers upto 2 Star Ability: The sessions will be geared towards developing personal skills up to a BCU 2* standard ( http://www.bcu.org.uk/tests-and-awards/personal-performance-awards/paddlesport-start-i-1-to-3-star/ .
Initially sessions for new paddlers will be run on the following dates:
•	13 May
•	27 May
•	10 June
•	24 June
As paddlers gain the appropriate skills, they will be able to join in the weekly sessions.

Paddlers of 2 Star Ability: Thursday night sessions will be every Thursday evening (weather permitting).

In both cases:

Time: 6.30pm (prompt) at the Club store at Thurso beach (West end of Esplanade - the old bathing huts). We will meet promptly at the start time.
If you are late, the person in charge may turn you away so as not to delay the canoeing activity for the others. When we finish, is again dependant on the weather and the group.

Cost (members using Club equipment): £20 for 5 Sessions (paid inadvance)

Age: 14 and over. 13 years olds (by special permission from the Committee)

If you are in any doubt about the weather then contact the Club Secretary during the day (tel: 01847 804610 up to 4.15pm or tel 01847 894756 after this time). It always useful to know who will be turning just in case things have to be changed.

In the interests of safety for young paddlers (Under 16), we would ask for parents / guardians (who are not paddling) to wait until a Club Official arrives.

For details on the sessions (what to bring etc) please look at the website (www.pentlandcanoeclub.org.uk/evening_sessions.php) or contact the Club Secretary.
Hazard: Wick River

The River Wick is usually paddled from Watten to the sea wiith the put in usually just upstream of the A882 Bridge. Above this there are many fences across the river. In very high water head clearance below fishermen's footbridges can be an issue. The first 6 km are grade 1 with a series of fishing weirs giving interest and a chance for novices to practice river skills. There have been two incidents in recent years where paddlers had problems with either wires across the river to stop cattle walking upstream, not in use 2009, and the watergate at Bilbster, an archetypical strainer(see photo). Warning signs were put in place after the first incident but have disappeared. The farmer has willingly agreed to replace his sign and the SCA have been contacted for a sign to indicate the need to portage above the watergate bridge(ND283535). From there to the town the river is a sluggish mature one with little currrent. Headwinds on this stretch can be strength sapping and lead to prolonged paddling times. Current picks up in the valley below the railway bridge. The groynes in the town can give grade 2 conditions if plenty water. Take out is above the weirs at the boating shed on the left bank or at the slipway below the road bridge at the river harbour.

The 6km above Bilbster is very suitable first trip for novices, and the whole river may be of interest to open canoe paddlers, but they should carry food, drinks and spare clothes to avoid emergencies arising. Fishing huts can be used for sheltered breaks in two places. In general the local fishermen do not relate well to us, and paddling on a Sunday is recommended. Further info can be got from Bill on 01955 603512
